Onam is a ten days long festival celebrated by Malayalis in Kerala or in any part of the world. It is an official festival of the Kerala state celebrated to mark the visit of the Great King Mahabali. It is also said that it is celebrated to mark the harvest season in Kerala. The best part of Onam Festival is the Sadya! On the day of Thiruvonam, you are blessed with the traditional Onam Sadya. This would have more than 25 different types of dishes which is served on a banana leaf. During the festival, people will hold grand processions, boat races, and traditional folk dances such as Thiruvathira, Kathakali, and Pulikali. Families will make floral decorations called pookkalam that are placed on the ground in front of their houses to welcome King Mahabali. The SKIPS centres celebrated Onam on 2nd September. The kids and teachers were dressed in traditional attire. Kids enjoyed making the pookkalam. The visit by Mahabali added to the festive mood. The kids enjoyed singing and dancing to the Onam songs. The day finished off with the mouth watering Onam sadya served on banana leaves. All our Samites enjoyed celebrating the festival of Onam.
