Instilling a love of reading during early years gives a child a head start on expanding vocabulary and building independence and self-confidence. It helps children learn to make sense not only of the world around them but also people, building social-emotional skills and of course, imagination. In short, reading enhances creativity, critical thinking, vocabulary, and the ability to articulate thoughts in young children. It facilitates their connection with their environment and real-life scenarios. Therefore, it is imperative to establish an enabling environment where children engage in pleasurable reading and develop skills that will last throughout their lives.
When children learn to read at an early age, they have greater general knowledge, a wider range of vocabulary, they are more fluent readers, and they have improved attention spans and better concentration. The SKIPS Team organizes “SKIPS READATHON CAMPAIGN” every year to bring our Samites closer to books and inculcate reading habits in them at an early age. Various activities are organized in the school as part of the READATHON campaign which includes read aloud sessions, role play, story telling, puppet shows and dressing up as characters from the stories.
The READATHON campaign also encompasses home activity involving reading sessions with the parent and the child. As part of READATHON parents are requested to read out stories to kids every day. A reading log is also maintained to keep track of the books and time spent on reading. These activities are encouraged to inculcate reading habits in our Samites and to help them become individuals who have a passion for reading.
